VALS: ("Values and Lifestyles") is a proprietary research methodology used for psychographic market segmentation. Market segmentation is designed to guide companies in tailoring their products and services in order to appeal to the people most likely to purchase them.
Demographics: defined as relating to a particular sector of a population.
During the research and planning period, I produced a readership profile similar to the one produced by NME to help me understand more about the type of audience that would be interested about my content and thus allowing me to influence design and content ideas based upon the results on my readership profile. This allowed a more appropriate product to be created for my target audience.
Core target audience specifics:
Age: 15-25
Gender: Equally aimed at males and females who live an alternate lifestyle
Social Grade: ABC1
VALS: These would be centred around those with sufficient resources and motivation to succeed in life.
The audience would fit into the alternative rock music sub-culture lifestyle, as the magazine is centred around those who strongly prefer the rock genre.
My audience who be avid users of a plethora of available media texts given the stereotypical view on the typical reader.
I have specifically selected this group of people as I personally can connect easily with this group thus making media content centred around these people would be much easier than creating a hip-hop or pop themed magazine.
Despite the magazine being aimed at a specific group of people, it can be argued that those who show a slight interest or those who like change can view this magazine to gain more information based on what they are newly experiencing. This media text can be argued as being unintentionally aimed at everyone.
